SQUID DISSECTION

Focus on taxonomy and anatomy identification. Students will learn the importance of classification and why dissection can be useful in science. Hands on learning during this class takes on a whole new meaning. We always handle our specimens with respect and gratitude for our opportunity to learn.

MARINE LIFE

A quick lecture on the significance of marine birds and how we can help their survival through mindful daily practices. Students receive a different perspective of the island in their kayaks while searching for marine life. A special note on our part in ocean conservation through stewardship is implemented in this class.

ISLAND ECOLOGY

While exploring the heights of the island students will learn the history of Catalina. The impact that imported animals have on the small ecosystem of the island. This class shines a light on the role scientist play and how nature responds to foreign plants and animals.

UNDERWATER DISCOVERY

This exciting snorkel class submerges us in the watery world of Gallagher's Cove. Highlighting fish identification and the immense role each animal, plant, and algae play in a healthy biome. Students will over come fears and emerge with a thirst for more time in the water.

ROCK POOL EXPLORATION

As the tide falls, unique animals are exposed to the air for us to explore. These hardy creatures have a story worth telling and we are here to share it with you. Students can observe the changes in water level and the effect it has on the animals on the rocks.

CONSERVATION

Catalina is a unique place to explore what Southern California would look like if it wasn't so populated and the landscape wasn't altered. This truly is a gem for conservationist. The class highlights the success stories of the conservancy and informs students of current research and projects like the Catalina Island Shrew.

BIOLUMINESCENT

Night snorkels are an exciting way to see our nocturnal animals like lobster and eel. A microscope lab is paired with the activity to enhance the understanding of the magical glow to these wonderful tiny creatures of the sea. Fears will be faced and smiles will emerge

INTERIOR HIKE

Heading upwards with a steep yet rewarding hike, students climb to the top of Gallagher's Cove and enjoy a view of Avalon. During the hike there are chances to see free roaming bison and one of their watering holes.

UNDERWATER DISCOVERY PART 2

On the second snorkel of the week students can enjoy without fiddling with equipment and give more attention to the magical world below.  Exploring the cove next door allows students to see aa sandy bottom that leads to a rocky area where seals like to sleep.

KAYAK PART 2

Frog rock is an iconic rock on Catalina and we are a short paddle away. The students have an opportunity to look for a sunken sail boat along the way. More time on the water means more chances to see larger mammals like dolphins and seal lions.

SHARK EDUCATION 

Our time at camp extends past the classroom and visit to the island. After learning about facts and fictions of sharks the students make a poster for Shark Awareness. Redefining what these important creatures do for our planet. Helping inform others of interesting facts and truths about one of the oldest animals on the planet.
