3 Day Classes

Squid Dissection

Squid Dissection

Squid Dissection

Two boys studying a dissected specimen on a plate in a classroom.

Focus on taxonomy and anatomy identification in our marine science classes. Students will learn the importance of classification and why dissection can be useful in science. Our outdoor educational trips provide hands-on learning experiences that take on a whole new meaning. We always handle our specimens with respect and gratitude for our opportunity to learn.

Marine Life

Squid Dissection

Squid Dissection

Four dolphins swimming and splashing in the ocean.

This session offers a quick lecture on the significance of marine birds and how we can contribute to their survival through mindful daily practices. Students enrolled in our marine science classes receive a unique perspective of Catalina Island while kayaking and searching for marine life. Additionally, a special focus on our role in ocean conservation through stewardship is integrated into this outdoor educational trip.

Island Ecology

Squid Dissection

Underwater Discovery

A group of people hiking and observing nature on a trail.

While exploring the heights of Catalina Island, students will engage in a unique educational experience that highlights Catalina Island education. They will learn about the history of the island and the impact that imported animals have on its small ecosystem. This class illuminates the role scientists play in marine science classes and how nature responds to foreign plants and animals during outdoor educational trips.

Underwater Discovery

Tide Pool Exploration

Underwater Discovery

Two snorkelers underwater waving at the camera with bright orange goggles.

This exciting snorkel class, part of our Catalina Island education program, submerges us in the watery world of Gallagher's Cove. It highlights fish identification and the immense role each animal, plant, and algae play in a healthy biome. Through our marine science classes, students will overcome fears and emerge with a thirst for more time in the water during these unforgettable outdoor educational trips.

Tide Pool Exploration

Tide Pool Exploration

Tide Pool Exploration

Group of people gathered on rocky outcrop near calm coastal bay with boats and hills.

As the tide falls, unique animals are exposed to the air for us to explore, especially during our outdoor educational trips on Catalina Island. These hardy creatures have a story worth telling, and we are here to share it with you through our marine science classes. Students can observe the changes in water level and the effect it has on the animals on the rocks.

5 Day Classes

Conservation

Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence

Aerial view of a coastal village with a pier and turquoise waters.

Catalina Island is a unique destination for those interested in exploring what Southern California might look like without heavy population and altered landscapes. This truly is a gem for conservationists. Through Catalina Island education, students can learn about the success stories of the conservancy and current research projects, such as the Catalina Island Shrew. Additionally, marine science classes and outdoor educational trips provide hands-on experiences that deepen understanding of this remarkable ecosystem.

Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence

Group of people illuminated by underwater lights at night in the sea.

Night snorkels are an exciting way to see our nocturnal animals like lobster and eel. This activity is part of our Catalina Island education program, which includes marine science classes to enhance the understanding of the magical glow of these wonderful tiny creatures of the sea. Participants will face their fears and emerge with smiles during these unforgettable outdoor educational trips.

Interior Hike

Underwater Discovery Part 2

Aerial view of a group hiking on a winding forest trail.

Heading upwards with a steep yet rewarding hike, students participating in Catalina Island education programs climb to the top of Gallagher's Cove and enjoy a stunning view of Avalon. During their outdoor educational trips, there are opportunities to see free roaming bison and one of their watering holes, making this hike a unique experience for those taking marine science classes.

Underwater Discovery Part 2

Underwater Discovery Part 2

Person snorkeling underwater with orange mask and rays of light.

On the second snorkel of the week, students can fully immerse themselves in the experience without fiddling with equipment, allowing them to focus more on the magical underwater world. Exploring the cove next door during our marine science classes provides students with the opportunity to witness a sandy bottom that leads to a rocky area where seals like to sleep, all part of our Catalina Island education and outdoor educational trips.

Kayak Part 2

Underwater Discovery Part 2

Shark Education

Two people kayaking on clear blue water near a rocky shoreline.

Frog Rock is an iconic landmark on Catalina Island, just a short paddle away. During our marine science classes, students have the exciting opportunity to look for a sunken sailboat along the way. More time spent on the water during our outdoor educational trips means more chances to see larger mammals like dolphins and sea lions.

Shark Education

Underwater Discovery Part 2

Shark Education

Two leopard sharks swimming close to the sandy ocean floor in clear blue water.

Our time at camp goes beyond the classroom and our visit to Catalina Island, where we engage in marine science classes. After learning about the facts and fictions of sharks, the students create a poster for Shark Awareness. This project redefines the important roles these creatures play in our planet's ecosystem, helping to inform others about fascinating truths and facts regarding one of the oldest animals on Earth. These outdoor educational trips provide a unique opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of marine life.
